St. Francis Wood Classic I

San Francisco, CA

Set in San Francisco’s venerable St. Francis Wood neighborhood, this classic Spanish Mediterranean home is a perfect example of a house with good bones that we transformed into a warm, welcoming, and contemporary home. With an eye for function, a confident approach to color and materials, careful attention to detail and respect for architectural proportion, scale, and flow, we created a home filled with joy and comfort.

As the project’s managers, we orchestrated every detail of the design from start to finish for these repeat clients, meeting with the neighborhood architectural committee, overseeing the permitting process for both the renovation and landscape, and managing every aspect of construction. Deep conversations with our clients revealed their primary goals: a gracious space for indoor/outdoor living with a larger, more integrated kitchen as the hub of the house, and a renovated primary suite that fully embraced the views of the ocean. Personalized spaces, such as private work areas and a dedicated media room, perfectly suit our clients’ needs.

Using an exuberant but sophisticated color palette, we chose jewel tones as others might use neutrals, layering color and pattern on walls, floors, and furnishings. We carefully designed every detail, from custom cabinetry to the living room mantle and bar, to the full-height leaded antiqued glass window that overlooks the main stair. Deep reds and blues soften as public spaces transition to private, and a series of arched openings – echoed in custom furniture pieces – imbue this home with continuity and grace.
